The historic Old Town of Amersham in the Misbourne Valley retains much of the atmosphere of a small 18th-century coaching town, while Amersham-on-the-Hill grew following the development of the Metropolitan railway line. The Old Town has a wide high street with a prominent Market Hall, many half timbered houses and inns and 17th-century almshouses. A mile west of the town is Shardeloes House set on a hill. This is an Adam mansion and the former home of the Drake family.
Amersham is the last stop on the Metropolitan tube line from Baker Street.
