Situated on the main road to Oxford from London {A40}. It is divided into two parts-the old town is a wide highway flanked by former coaching inns and old houses; there is a church at the crossroads. In the churchyard there is a neglected memorial to the poet Edmund Waller {1605-87} who lived at nearby Hall Barn. There is also a small memorial to the early statesman Edmund Burke {1729-97}. You can also see the fine bishop’s chair given to the church by Benjamin Disraeli when he became Lord Beaconsfield.
Near the crossroads, the White Hart inn has a bust of G.K. Chesterton, who lived nearby and frequented the inn.
The new town grew with the coming of the Great Western Railway.
